Recently families who have children preparing for the First Reconciliation were asked to complete an object lesson at home to explain the difference between a sin and a mistake. After parents gave a description of the 2, families participated in the activity. The directions said to use a basketball and basketball hoop, but families were encouraged to be creative in what they used.
First each member of the family needed to do their very best to make a free throw shot. It was okay if the shot was not made. This activity represented life, when we try to do good and choose the right, we are aiming to behave as God wants. Sometimes, we might make a mistake, even though our intent was to do good.
Then each member of the family was directed to throw the ball into the basket, but needed to face the wrong direction and throw the ball the wrong way. This exercise demonstrated sin. We were asked to make the basket but did not even try. Just like sometimes we know what God wants us to do, but do what we want anyway.
